Graduation has long been delightedly portrayed a milestone in life for which it is marking a completion of integrated series of primary, secondary and tertiary formal education. Nevertheless, do people nowadays really view fresh graduates such positively, say the potential contributions to the respectively targeted industry and nations, more than ever in the era of globalization? It is about a certainty you’d have outpaced everyone in having the answer in mind.

Putting aside how cynical, if not optimistic, others’ perceptions and perspectives are on us, unsurprisingly, we could somehow hardly find ourselves remaining unfazed and unperturbed with the inner worries mounting from the authentically real situation of the day, which had been featuring unstable employment rate or opportunities, economical efficiency, multi capability-, rather high performance- and competitiveness-orientation.

In light of the incontrovertible reality and for the sake of positioning own fiscal survival at the self-conceptualized comfort zone, everyone would have been down the stream of the so called rife rivalry overflowing with the stench of unwholesome competing psyche coupled with an array of injurious tactics and ploys. It would be timely to question when only we as the sensual beings can be totally liberated from the samsara (sufferings) and the endless cycles of metempsychosis?

Of late, I and some friends had the opportunities in joining some Tibetan buddhism prayers and talks solemnly conducted by His Eminence Nyima Vosal Rinpoche. There is a paragraph of foreword written near the beginning pages of the scripture had grabbed my most attention for 2 reasons where firstly it is well-translated in Chinese wording and secondly it illustrates the core values of altruism in the Vajrayana and Mahayana practice. It generally stated: “we love happiness and demand no samsara, meanwhile other sensual beings are similar as us in the pursuit of happiness and avert sufferings. Since the immeasurable numbers of life in the past, utmost reasonable it is to treat every being as our own dearest father and mother.”

Outpoured with kindness and compassion, His Eminence Nyima Vosal Rinpoche did expound on the importance of upholding Triple Gems (Buddha, Buddha Teachings and Buddhism monastic) in the complicated working life ahead, rising of Bodhi Mind and great compassion, being calm to accommodate the variable and changeable landscape in the world and the karmic relationship attributed to our conduct, be it of benevolent or perishing, which would lead us perpetually unless and until we achieve buddhahood. In conjunction to the annual senior’s farewell commemoration, I wish all of the best and greatest for senior members who are going to “fly to next unknown destination” and junior members who comparably “have more days to decide where to fly next”.

A Big Stride Ahead, Promise Awaits Aspirant

Being gratified by messages as to the call for contribution towards the forthcoming annual Senior’s Farewell Commemoration had spurred me to come up with this writing. Presence of this English-written article would surely beget full of curiosity and if possibly up to a greater extent, create slight uproars among our dear Buddhist members. Thus placating the unnecessary arguments with reasons is what role I should play at the first place. Simply an undisputable fact that there are a number of English-oriented members insistently pursuing Buddha teachings in our association, I found none of conflicting elements as if I spearhead the move of yielding a foremost article written in English to cater for not only their interests, but all. Knowing fully well that the English-oriented members might have been facing lingual stumbling blocks in the pipeline of pursuing Buddha teachings, I feel willingly obliged to insist on!

Of late, having interacted with some of the acting top echelon thru Facebook, I somehow felt their trivial worries prevalently of the way they should take helm of the association. This phenomenon was proven to be normal as nobody gets born with charismatic leading ability congenitally endowed. Speaking in my capacity as an ex-central committee member, this fledgling Buddhist association purveys us all about learning – whenever we face problems in handling activities, there are constructive advices from our experienced SENIOR, thus we learnt! Whenever we are overwhelmed with personal frustrations and engulfed by the qualms of homesickness, there are warm concerns again from our lovely SENIOR, thus we got enlightened!

Managed to go through several series of photos together we all were taken in Buddhist association in the days which departed several months to years from today, it is dismayfully learned that time lapsed as swift as if we took years in merely an unwitting blink. Refreshing the moments together we came across, we learnt Buddha teachings, we planned and implemented activities, we argued on different perspectives, we attended to each others’ situations, we enjoyed the participatory excitation, we channeled our compassions out and “Jointly We Underwent Joys and Sorrows”, one, especially our seniors, might have felt contented and worthwhile so much so that being worried with the imminent partings.

As to what title my text goes by, I urge that my “former comrades in arm” to stride a big step ahead, be fully equipped with skills, professions and self-confidence as well which are indispensably instrumental to confront with various sorts of challenges ahead, may it be of employment or pursuit of advanced study. On the other hands, you all are too encouraged to do more good deeds in concurrence of what Buddha and Sifu taught. It is vital as many had seemingly deviated from the right way, let alone committed lots of conscience-stricken actions, allegedly in order to compete with others in today’s complex community. Once reaching financial sustainability, do remember that there are dark corners all around the world which comprise of under-privileged living in utterly deplorable conditions and those akin really needs YOU. By the way, I kept alert me that my writing had occupied some 2 pages of the freshly-published pamphlets, thus I end it by quoting the late Master Shen Yan as saying:

“To let the circumstances dictate one’s state of mind is human;
to let the mind dictate the circumstances is sage.”

“POLITICAL” AMBITION AT IMPASSE

“What is your ambition?” grabbed my attention the most in the class since childhood. It is certainly not that I was eagerly seeking others’ answers, yet I enjoyed the moments whenever I utter it – LAWMAKER!

Albeit the position is somewhat resembling “LAWYER” from the superficial aspect, the activities carried out by the former is totally distinguishing far from the latter. “Lawmaker makes the law, while lawyer being law consultant” best exemplifies their pivotal differences. Serving the people resided within constituency and getting the governmental masterplan across are under the ambit of a democratically selected lawmaker too. I’d been enlightened that to be an upright and conscientious lawmaker, the wage sometimes is not on par with, otherwise in a more precise term, lesser than the amount of service purveyed!

One may not qualify to choose the path in becoming a legislator in case he or she fails to overturn the striking dissents from family members, parents in particular. It’s learnt one of those dominant forces that dictates their minds to come out with such intense objections would be the vivid dark cases happened in our “political arena” which were still at the back of their minds. An agonizing death of a vulnerable political aide at a date which was not too distant from today could be a fresh instance that compounds their worries and anxieties.

Another remarkable testament to the blackened political case would be the political massacre in Philippine. Reportedly, a spate of utterly ATROCIOUS, STRONG-ARMED, UNCONSTITUTIONAL, ILLEGAL MURDERING had been exploited merely to combat the opponent party for which it was on the way to file candidacy for the upcoming governor’s election.

Have I come a long way in overcoming all those complicated stumbling blocks? Am I capable to survive the “water-logged” universe? Am I stout enough to pursue what my ambition tells? Frankly, I have no idea, yet for the time being, due answer is an obligation.

主席的话

转眼间，沙大佛友联谊会的大专佛法营已迈入了十周年。经由筹委们努力不懈的宣传，换来了今天破百的总人数，其中五十二位为工委及五十位为营员。此外，正所谓佛法是不分区域、不分界限的，很荣幸地本届大专营亦接获了纳闽区沙大分校数位同学的热烈支持及报名。

犹记得数月前,小弟在几场沙大佛友联谊会的活动（如迎新会及佛法班）上宣传时曾经讲述：本届大专营乃结合了九年来在大专营中所萃取出的精华！其实，这句话说得没错，因为届复一届的大专营皆是去芙成精的持续性过程，一代又一代的学长们把优质的保留，把劣质的去除，进而让学弟妹们在办大专营的过程中更为顺利。

《一个选择，一个转机》看似与市面上激励营的主题切合，但它更是与佛法有着密切的关系呢！藉由此主题，筹委们希望看到营员们“选择”参加了大专营后，将营中所修习到的佛法贯彻于生活中，从而时时观察自心，摒弃恶习，进而无时无刻心生善念，口说善语，身行善事。由于调正了身心后，慢慢地发现与曾因自己易怒的性格而导致友情破裂的朋友们重修旧好了、因感恩心而与家人的感情更和乐融洽了、因包容心而在功课上与同学们的合作更顺利了、在职场上与同事们更合作无间了。。。这些岂不是所谓的“转机”了吗？

在此，小弟真切地抱着感恩的心，感谢第十届大专佛法营所有筹委们这半年来在筹备工作上相互的扶持及无求的付出。筹备工作和功课的压力都没能把你们撼倒，你们的确是小弟眼中最棒的一群哦！另外，我也借此机会，特别鸣谢寂静禅林的师父们和一群不辞劳苦为佛教事业打拼的本届大专营赞助人-寂静禅林护法团及阿芳姐。

前两天一个异常炎热的下午，我与友人从位于大学内偏远的学校，驶着汽车奔往图书馆的食堂用餐。途中，手机突然响起，忙着使方向盘及排挡的我依然习惯性地从裤头里掏出了手机，毫不留意手机屏幕所显示的来电号码，便把它给接听了。

“快点来救我啊。。！”甫接过电话，便听到这微弱的求救声。原以为这只不过是朋友的恶作剧，我亦无趣地回上了一句:“喂，你要一起吃饭吗？”不一会儿，手机传出：“快点来救我。。快点来救我啊。。还不救我的话，我会被打的啊啊啊。。”乍听之下，求救声不仅加剧，一阵阵凄惨的嚎哭声更是不绝于耳际。我真的愣了。原本在小山坡的窄路上往前奔驰的车子，因失去了我的专注力而缓缓地往后退去而不自知。所幸友人见状后，立刻使劲地把手提刹车器拉了一把，才把车子停驻在原地。

说真的，一阵阵的“鬼哭神嚎”直教我毛骨悚然。此时，失措的我了解持续的慌乱并于事无补，倒不如正定些，向这位“求助者”确定身份。“你是谁？你到底是谁？”我大声质问道。然而，不晓得是因为被严重迫害而惊慌，抑或是听不清楚我的质问声，对方并没有正面地回应我的问题，反而不间断地向我求助。由于仍未确认来电者的身份，我一次又一次地提高声量，重复同样的问题。

僵持了大约三分钟后，上气不接下气的“求助者”更可怜兮兮地道出：“。。快点来救我啊。。我是你的儿子。。你的孩子呀！！” 呵，这下破绽全露（嘿，我年纪还輕着呢，哪来这么一位装可怜的的儿子呀），我心里一凉，毫不犹豫地把手机关上，结束了这一通令人动魄惊心的“求救电话”。

与数位好友分享事情的经过后，大家无不感叹诈骗集团的手法真是层出不穷。如果各位读者有注意的话，其实那三分钟重复的求救过程是诈骗集团能否把我掉上钩（可能因此而到处筹款，以赎回被绑票的人）的关键时刻。为什么呢？原因很简单，他们在幕后经已部署一些“专业人士”，透过接电者的声音，而进一步鉴定性别及年龄，以确保诈骗万无一失。

爱心叮咛：
正所谓：“害人之心不可有，防人之心不可无”，小弟希望这件事情足以让各位提高警惕，以智慧分辨事情的真伪，慎防诈骗集团害人不浅的圈套及手法。此外，小弟也呼吁各位时时警惕自己，千万不要因为想从别人身上索取某种利益，而做出打妄语、欺诈及诈骗等下下策，要清楚受害者会是很痛苦的哦！

INSULT OR INDUCEMENT ??????

After settling on the seat in an aircraft heading towards Kota Kinabalu (KK), a middle-aged man sitting next to me started talking to me…

“Hi, are you going to have a trip in KK?”, the man asked in a welcoming tone.

“Nop, I’m pursuing my course in University Malaysia Sabah.” I replied.

“?? Was there an university in Sabah??”, the man asked with a pair of dubious eyes looking at me despite being a Sabahan, who stayed in Ranau, Sabah.

“Yes, it had been established ten years and above from today.” I confidently answered.

The following dialog would be the culminating point, namely climax of this post:

“Oh I see. We (our company) never and will not hire any employees graduated from local universities.”, the man said with a hint of sarcasm along with slight chuckling.

Frankly speaking, these unexpected and devastating words really turned me into a disillusioning and upset mode. Soon after it, I was further informed that the man was one of the higher-ups in a well-known listed company engaging in construction sector. The man added he had been pursuing the degree of engineering in England in 1970s.

“Sir, then can you kindly set out the reasons of not employing local graduates???”, I bombarded.

“It’s simply because they lack of wider and broader field of vision.”, he responded patiently. Afterward, he took out a gameboy of latest edition and became steeped in it throughout the flight.

Upon the ‘ball’ was returned to me, my thinking impliedly encircled at a question that are we (local undergraduate) resorting to failure and high possibility of unemployment due to our low competitiveness in the end?

I pressingly craved for an explicit answer ……

It sounds quite sorrowful and sad...

However, thank god! There are some groups of nice friends here in UMS assisting me to get rid of the sorrow.

Again thankful to all my friends of remembering my birthday and celebrating it "crazily" together with me...

Yo~ Albert Cheng has returned with his energetic character and full sacks of stories are to be shared with YOU!!!

Quite a lots of friends started questioning me being disappeared from my blog in these 2 or 3 months. Here i need to send in my fullest gratitude as none of them was not showing their concern about me and my life. Of course, i was taken for task by some of them (who were somehow impatient and eager to my posts) over the delay of the post entitled <<你不是真正的快乐>>. Being busy dealing with piles of lab reports, assignments, quizzes and mid-term exams before, i tried my utmost of spending out some time on my blog but i failed to do so. Anyway, merely blaming on insufficient time in my life would be ironic as if i have the same standard as a president with strenuous tasks who would find 24hours per day to be really inadequate. Therefore, difficulties to access to internet did contribute to the delay too.

Upon returning, i insisted on publishing the owing post entitled <<你不是真正的快乐>>. Let's have a browse...

All these photos were taken during the several days before Chinese New Year when we (buddhist society in my university) paid a visit to a department treating children who are disabled, handicapped and critically ill in hospital Likas, Kota Kinabalu. As guided by seniors, our visit was aimed to show our love, concern and compassion towards the suffering children, who might have lost the will and confidence to live due to their congenitally incomplete life. All of us felt gratified when most of the children were joyful throughout the games sessions and magic shows performed by former president. We didn't expect much, nevertheless we just carried a hope that our visit was able of removing their unnoticeable sufferings by a short period. metta^^

Hi, really welcome to all readers and visitors of this blog. Lots of apologies need to be made (especially for those who've been long-awaited) as to the delayed update of my blog. The reasons, from first to last, are mainly due to lack of self-adaptation towards new and quite challenging semester.

Though getting busy with those academic affairs, however i did not forgo the opportunities of joining some "meaningful" activities. Learning from the activities, there are many unfortunates outside of our living circle, who suffer from terrible diseases and deplorable, crappy living conditions. Anyway as for our paramount concerns, their grievances had long been getting short shrift and they desperately need countless material and mental helpings from us!!

Therefore, my upcoming post's title will be :'你不是真正的快乐'.

放生大法会^^

These are so-called Chinese soft-shelled turtles. They are really too impatient to wait for being freed during chanting by Rinpoche.

Our "sacred" ceremony was held at a naturally nice place in Sabah-Tanparuli.

This little turtle seemed reluctant to return to sea. Wondering why it turned back several times after being released again?

Uncle is carefully checking whether there is any marine creature left inside the tank.

Wow, I was really astounded with such great number of eels inside the pail while finished tearing off the black plastic bag. I was told that these creatures are normally cooked together with rice and served as UNAGI-DON in Japanese restaurant. OMG #_*

VEGETARIANISM = SAVING LIFE ?!?!

First and foremost, there is the necessity for us to know that nothing is perfect in this world. Even though we suggest and mete out a best solution with its greatest benefits, saying of it do not have any weakness is surely out of the question. Same goes to vegetarianism, many practitioners did face difficulties in either practicing or promoting it to others. Yet they bent on practicing vegetarianism by overcoming those difficulties with plenty of grits. WHY? There are various reasons rooted deeply in their minds. Some may be sympathetic to the vulnerable creatures. Some may perceive that creatures other than mankind do possess survival liberty and human beings are not given any authority to slaughter them easily for whatever purposes. Some may practice vegetarianism for the sake of their health and of course, we can’t rule out that some may follow others blindly to practice vegetarianism.

The translated sentences below are quoted from a senior’s words:

“Let’s say we bought the marine creatures from a restaurant and released them, what if the owner of the restaurant is then going to catch another batch of marine creatures to replenish the stock? ”

“Similar to case of vegetarianism, there are still lots of people slaughtering animals for their meal even if we keep on practicing vegetarianism. So what is the use of vegetarianism consequently? ”

Referring to the sentences above, we can classify human beings into three types. The first type is of those who practice vegetarianism, while the second type is for those who consume animals in their meal. There are numerous raison d'êtres suggesting the second-type human to take meat as food. For instances, their meat consuming may be with the intention of obtaining sensual pleasure. Besides, they may have been used to adopt an eating habit according to the Food Guide Pyramid which recommends a well-balanced diet whereby people need to eat a variety of foods with the specific amounts from each level. It includes cereals, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, fish, meat, poultry and legumes. The third type is of those composed of either owners or waiters in the restaurant which serve meals by on-the-spot slaughtering of creatures.

Vegetarianism had been known as an actual and thoroughgoing action which ensures both life of animals (or fauna) and health of practitioners to be guaranteed. By simple comparison, second-type human beings are more susceptible of being educated and converted to practice vegetarianism instead of third-type. Since slaughtering activity had become their job, we could hardly ask them (third-type), especially those without any other professions or skills, to change by simply enlightening about the benefits of vegetarianism and deplorable effects of killing animals. In addition, one critical thing to be remembered is that they desperately need the job in order to support domestic expenses.

Therefore, as a starting point, we should endeavor our utmost to educate the young generations and simultaneously convey the vegetarianism’s information to public (without differentiating which type they are) thru campaigns, health talks, religious talks and books as well. Surely it will bring greater effects as if government and Non Governmental Organizations reach out their full supports. As to education of young generations, it’s a necessity to egg on the Education Department to integrate the ideology of vegetarianism into the Science Textbook for both the primary and secondary school children. Besides, school authority may also take a proactive role to encourage vegetarianism among students by allowing one or more veggie shops to run their business in school. By doing these, the core understanding of vegetarianism in students will more or less influence themselves, their parents and relatives as well to practice vegetarianism and stop killing animals. Believe me! Those positive powers are capable of turning the world into a more harmony and peaceful one.

Consequently with the drastic fall in number of people consuming animals as foods (which means demands ↓), the related parties are going to reduce slaughtering activities (which means productivity ↓). Hence, more and more animals are saved and at the same time, more and more people are possessing good health. If this astounding trend continues, it’s not impossible that the owners, who involved in slaughtering activities, are trying to change into other jobs due to the serious downturn in slaughtering business.

Another translated sentence quoted from a senior’s words:

“One day, I took a stroll with two boys at the market in America. There was a stall selling lobsters and I felt sympathetic as they are going to be killed soon. Unexpectedly, one of the boys urged me to buy all of them before they were killed. As the lobsters cost an utter high price, I’m mulling over whether is it worthy to do so? However, being touched and impressed with the words came out from a small boy, I determined to buy all of the lobsters with my hard-earned money, which then cost me about $200. After that, we chanted and released them into the sea. Our meaningful motion had been noticed by passerby, the parents of the boys and workers in the market who knew that we intent to save the life of the lobsters. Will it bring positive and great effects after our action was wide spread around by those mentioned parties?”

Definitely it will bring some good effects as long as our actions are kind. However such action would exert lesser extent of effects compared to promoting vegetarianism. Not that I did not agree with such action, but there are piles of worries shrouded in my heart that those passerby and workers would only treat the action of releasing lobsters as a weird, surprising and strange incident instead of a lesson that will directly turn them into not consuming any meat or involving in any slaughtering activities. All these are because of such motion being unprecedented to them. It would be worthy as if the money ($200) is donated or transferred to some recognized foundations or associations like Tzu Chi and WWF. In a way that is happily all too real, these associations are now on the right track of receiving astoundingly increasing numbers of members from all around the world, who started consenting to the necessity of saving life of innocent and naïve.

P/S It can’t be denied that united force is more powerful and influential than sole individual.
